Will & Matt’s Excellent Immersive Adventure
A lot of conversation has taken place over the past few years about Dolby Atmos and immersive formats in general, mostly centered around mixing. However, not much attention has been paid to the idea of recording and/or producing music specifically for immersive formats. This omission makes a measure of sense, as our current immersive workflows and tools are all focused on stereo. As the market for immersive music continues to expand, though, our understanding of how to create it will have to evolve as well.
In late 2024, Adrian Weidmann from Immersive Design Labs (IDL) contacted my partner, Matt Wallace, and me to ask if we’d be interested in recording a demonstration session during the NAMM Show weekend. The session would feature their new 7.0.4 microphone array and small diaphragm condenser microphones, and we leapt at the chance.
I’d like to take you through the choices we made for this unique recording session and some of the lessons we learned along the way.
