RECORDING Techniques – Bass Production Tips
Last month, I wrote about the joys and perils of drum production. The main takeaway was that working with the drummer to create a consistent drum pattern for each section can help each part of a song develop its own character. This includes not only the patterns and parts the drummer plays, but also the feel, tone and intensity of their playing. Nailing this down at the foundational level makes it easier for the other musicians to create parts that fit with the drum track and ultimately support the vibe and intent of the song.
This month, we move on to producing bass tracks. Whether you are a producer, engineer or a recording musician wearing all the hats, understanding the role of bass in a song, along with being able to clearly explain what you might want from a bassist in a session, can make the recording process much easier.
In a traditional rhythm section of guitars, keyboards, bass and drums, the role of bass is multifaceted. It serves as the bridge between the rhythm section and the harmonic instruments, connecting the drummer to the guitars and keyboards while providing essential elements of both.
