It used to be that making a record was difficult, and that was part of what made it special.

You needed a studio. You needed microphones, consoles, tape machines, musicians, engineers and, most importantly, money. Lots of it. Making an album was an event. The process itself created a barrier between someone who wanted to make a record and someone who actually made one.
