Inside the Box - Recording the Hybrid Band

Despite the prevalence of overdubbing, loops, and AI assistance, a group of musicians playing and recording together simultaneously is still a great way to work, often yielding a musical interplay that can be difficult or impossible to achieve through successive overdubs. While the players remain the same, the instruments and tools continue to evolve. Thanks to hyperrealistic virtual instruments and amp modeling, today’s band can be a hybrid of miked-up instruments in the studio and virtual instruments in the box. While hybrid sessions have many of the same considerations as a traditional band recording, they may include a few new wrinkles.
