Inside the Studio – Cool Mics by Non-Mic Companies

In previous installments of this column over the past few years, I have highlighted some of my favorite mics, from standard workhorses like the Shure SM7B to the DPA 4011 condenser mic. The latter I used to record every source on a song in last year’s mic locker issue. This time I want to talk about some of my favorite microphones from high-end boutique manufacturers that are not thought of as microphone companies. Anytime an established brand ventures out past its usual course of business, they need to be careful. It costs a lot of money to bring a product to market, and if it’s not something you’re known for, you better make sure that it’s good and has a story to tell. These particular mics certainly have a story to tell…
