As we reflect on 40 years of RECORDING Magazine, I posed a question to our editorial family:

What piece of gear had the biggest impact on your life as an audio engineer?

For those of us with decades under our belts as musicians, producers, engineers and gear reviewers, narrowing it down to one piece isn’t easy. Gear is a journey; one piece leads to another, and as our knowledge expands, something we once considered “the one” may eventually become just a stepping stone.
