Session Log - Becca Stevens & Elan Mehler
In the last installment of Session Log, I wrote about the epic undertaking of the Newvelle Records album Kimbrough, recorded in honor of the late musician, composer and educator Frank Kimbrough, who left us one year and one month ago.
Newvelle Records releases a lot of gorgeous vinyl-only albums. Someday we'll dig into one of my personal favorites, Strata, an instrumental duo recording by Skuli Sverrisson and Bill Frisell (I enthusiastically and genuinely urge you to check this one out). Since this issue of RECORDING is dedicated to vocals, I'm going to tell you about another beautiful Newvelle album. This one actually changed the label's business model; it stands as Newvelle's first-ever digital-only release. I'm talking about Pallet on Your Floor, by Grammy Award-nominated singer and composer Becca Stevens and the co-founder of Newvelle Records, pianist Elan Mehler. The genesis of this album is unique, and the vocal performance on it is spectacular.
