Now Mod This! The joys and satisfaction of mic modding

The concept of mic modding—upgrading the components of a microphone to improve sonic performance—has fascinated me ever since reading Scott Dorsey’s early 2000s articles in RECORDING, which provided detailed instructions on sprucing up Oktava MK-012 and MK-219/319 mics. For those who made these modifications, excellent results warranted the cost and effort involved.

When I worked in recording facilities that were well stocked with great classic mics, I had little need for my own mic locker, but I kept Scott’s articles in the back of my mind. Eventually, I started building up a collection of vintage ribbons, reliable dynamics, and even a couple of good older LDC mics. But I couldn’t afford enough high end mics for a full band tracking session.
