Inside the Studio – Three Mics, One Mission
Recording Great Vocals
I still remember the first time I walked into a ※real” studio in Nashville, TN. Big glass. Bigger console. A mic locker that looked like a wine cellar for people who pronounce "Neumann" correctly. I remember thinking, Great…so I guess I can't make a great vocal unless I own one of these.
Spoiler alert: That's nonsense.
Over the years of tracking everything from whispery indie vocals to full-on rock screamers, I've learned a simple truth: Great vocal recordings are about intention, not price tags. And while it's fun to drool over boutique condensers (we've all been there, late-night online scrolling, coffee in hand), there are plenty of microphones that get the job done beautifully in real-world, home studio applications.
