Inside the Studio – Miking the Rythm Section
When miking up instruments, your job as an engineer or producer is to serve the session. Of course, over time, we all develop our favorite “go-to” setups—our favorite mics for a vocal session, the mics we prefer on a kick, snare or toms, or a guitar amp and so on, and that’s OK. It’s your job to develop a mental catalog of what microphones work on what, and where to put them. However, if you work in multiple genres, your mic choice may vary, and there’s nothing wrong with your “old standbys” slightly changing from project to project.
