When was the last time you considered, or even counted, how many different EQ options you have in your workstation? My plugin folder includes emulations of Neve, API, Trident, SSL and Helios EQ-equipped channel strips, as well as dozens of modern EQs, ranging from graphic to parametric, dynamic and minimum-phase designs. It’s a lot to work with.

Like most of you, I typically mix and match EQ plugins to achieve the desired sound from a specific audio track. But today, I’m going to suggest that you experiment with using only one model, brand or type of EQ for every track in your mix session. After all, your favorite classic records were mixed on consoles, and the engineers generally used only the EQ on the console.
