60 Years of Freakout!

Restoring Frank Zappa’s audacious debut for stereo, mono and Dolby Atmos

Sixty years after Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention released their debut double album, Freak Out! returns in its most focused and yet expansive edition yet. Produced by “Vaultmeister” Joe Travers, the five-CD/Blu-ray collection pairs John Polito’s new mastering with a rediscovered 1966 pre-master, a painstakingly restored mono version, demos, rehearsals, the classic live Fillmore recordings and session material. On the Blu-ray, Karma Auger and Erich Gobel of Studio1LA transform incomplete four-track sources into a remarkably full Dolby Atmos experience. That team joined our editor Paul Vnuk Jr. to discuss the album’s unlikely birth, the mysteries inside its tapes and the restoration philosophy that kept Zappa’s original intent at the center of every technical decision.
